According to the oxford dictionary; a hymn is a religious song or poem of praise to God. Hymns are sung to praise God, pray or show devotion unto God. Hymns are very special and unique songs; they can lead us into worship. I love hymns a lot; it is my favourite part of the church service.
Hymns have many benefits, many churches do not incorporate hymns into their services these days but for someone like me; hymns are important. Occasionally, I sing only hymns during my quiet time and the experience is usually beautiful.

Growing up in a Baptist church, we usually sing about three to four hymns before the end of the service. I am always in awe of the depth of the lyrics of those hymns. The lyrics sometimes spur worship or prayer and I can’t get enough of them. I have compiled 10 of my favourite hymns that help me to keep a cool head especially when I’m facing life challenges. Let me share these hymns and their lyrics with you.
Hymn 1: In Christ Alone
Written by: Keith Getty and Stuart Townend
Year: 2001
A soul-lifting hymn filled with powerful messages. The theme of the hymn centres on the life, death, resurrection and qualities of Christ. The song is a reminder of the power in the death of Christ. It continually renews the commitment that our hope is in Christ alone and in the victory and power of his life and death on the cross of Calvary which has given us a future and hope.
In Christ Alone Hymn Lyrics
Verse 1
In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
Verse 2
In Christ alone! – who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied –
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.
Verse 3
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine –
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
Verse 4
No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand:
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
Hymn 2: Just As I Am
Written by: Charlotte Elliot
Year: 1835
The hymn tells of the love of God and the cross. The song speaks of how God is willing to accept us as we are without condemnation. He is willing to help us turn to him, reform us and make us new again with his power.
Just as I am Hymn Lyrics
Verse 1: Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bid’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!
Verse 2: Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot;
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Verse 3: Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt;
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Verse 4: Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind;
Yes, all I need, in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Verse 5: Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Verse 6: Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Hymn 3: It Pays To Serve Jesus
Written by: Ell G. Christy
Year: 1894
Jesus is the best to serve, honour and worship. It pays to serve Jesus with all our hearts. When I remember the suffering and death of Jesus, I’m reminded of the love he has for me. The hymn is a constant reminder that serving God is better than riches or gold.
It Pays To Serve Jesus Lyrics
1 It pays to serve Jesus, I speak from my heart;
He’ll always be with us, if we do our part;
There’s naught in this wide world can pleasure afford,
There’s peace and contentment in serving the Lord.
Refrain:
I love Him far better than in days of yore,
I’ll serve Him more truly than ever before;
I’ll do as He bids me, whatever the cost,
I’ll be a true soldier — I’ll die at my post.
2 And oft when I’m tempted to turn from the track,
I think of my Savior — my mind wanders back
To the place where they nailed Him on Calvary’s tree—
I hear a voice saying, I suffered for thee. [Refrain]
3 There’s a place that remembrance still brings back to me,
’Twas there I found pardon — ’twas Heaven to me;
There Jesus spoke sweetly to my weary soul,
My sins were forgiven, He made my heart whole. [Refrain]
4 How rich is the blessing the world cannot give,
I’m satisfied fully for Jesus to live;
Tho’ friends may forsake me, and trials arise,
I’m trusting in Jesus, His love never dies. [Refrain]
I think you’ll love these posts;
Hymn 4: Through The Love of God Our Saviour
Ecclesiastes 8:12
But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off.
Written by: Mary Bowley Peters
Year: 1847
The love of God can keep us from difficult times and challenges. The hymn emphasises the fact that all will be well. The power of repeating the word ‘all will be well’ goes into our subconscious as a reminder that God has got me and ‘all will be well’.
Through The Love of God Our Saviour Lyrics
1 Through the love of God our Saviour,
all will be well.
Free and changeless is his favour,
all, all is well.
Precious is the blood that healed us,
perfect is the grace that sealed us,
strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,
all must be well.
2 Though we pass through tribulation,
all will be well.
Ours is such a full salvation,
all, all is well.
Happy, still in God confiding,
fruitful, if in Christ abiding,
holy, through the Spirit’s guiding,
all must be well.
3 We expect a bright tomorrow,
all will be well.
Faith can sing through days of sorrow,
‘All, all is well.’
On our Father’s love relying,
Jesus every need supplying,
in our living, in our dying,
all must be well.
Hymn 5: Head of Thy Church Triumphant
Written by: Charles Wesley
Year: 1745
A song of commitment to stand for Christ till he returns as the head of the church. The song explains that in persecution and tribulations, we will still stand for him. We believe he is the one true God and we will reign with him.
Head of Thy Church Triumphant Lyrics
1 Head of Thy Church triumphant,
We joyfully adore Thee;
Till Thou appear, Thy members here
Shall sing like those in glory:
We lift our hearts and voices
With blest anticipation,
And cry aloud, and give to God
The praise of our salvation.
2 While in affliction’s furnace,
And passing through the fire,
Thy love we praise Which knows our days,
And ever brings us nigher:
We lift our hands exulting
In Thine almighty favor;
The love Divine Which made us Thine,
Shall keep us Thine for ever.
3 Thou dost conduct Thy people
Through torrents of temptation;
Nor will we fear, While Thou art near,
The fire of tribulation:
The world, with sin and Satan,
In vain our march opposes;
Through Thee we shall Break through them all,
And sing the song of Moses.
4 By faith we see the glory
To which Thou shalt restore us,
The cross despise For that high prize
Which Thou hast set before us;
And if Thou count us worthy,
We each, as dying Stephen,
Shall see Thee stand At God’s right hand
To take us up to heaven.
Amen.
Hymn 6: The Great Physician
Psalms 103:1
Let all that I am praise the lord;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Written by: William Hunter
Year:
The name of Jesus is great and it heals. His name forgives sins and raises the dead; it is a name that the host of heaven bows to and hell acknowledges. ‘The great physician’ speaks more than healing to me; it emphasises that Jesus saves, delivers, sympathises and forgives our sins. The name of Jesus is a total package.

The Great physician Hymn Lyrics
1 The great Physician now is near,
the sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
oh! hear the voice of Jesus.
Refrain:
Sweetest note in seraph song,
sweetest name on mortal tongue;
sweetest carol ever sung,
Jesus, blessed Jesus.
2 Your many sins are all forgiven,
oh! hear the voice of Jesus;
go on your way in peace to heaven,
and wear a crown with Jesus. [Refrain]
3 All glory to the risen Lamb!
I now believe in Jesus;
I love the blessed Savior’s name,
I love the name of Jesus. [Refrain]
4 His name dispels my guilt and fear,
no other name but Jesus;
oh! how my soul delights to hear
the charming name of Jesus. [Refrain]
Hymn 7: Abide With Me
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
John 15:4
Written by: Henry Francis Lyte
Year:1847
The hymn serves as a reminder that God never fails nor does he change. The world around us may be changing speedily but God is still the same. He abides and protects us every time. When the help around us fails, he can help and bless us.
Abide With Me Lyrics
1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
2 Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away.
Change and decay in all around I see.
O thou who changest not, abide with me.
3 I need thy presence every passing hour.
What but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who like thyself my guide and strength can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless,
ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.
5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes.
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee;
in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
Hymn 8: We’re marching to Zion
Psalms 149:2
O Israel, rejoice in your Maker.
O people of Jerusalem, exult in your King. Psalm 149:2
Written by: Isaac Watts
Year: 1715
The hymn is a song of praise and worship to the king who rules in Zion. A call to everyone going to Zion; be joyful in your God and be glad. The hymn reminds me of heaven and its beauty.
We’re marching to Zion Lyrics
1 Come, we that love the Lord,
and let our joys be known.
Join in a song with sweet accord,
join in a song with sweet accord,
and thus surround the throne,
and thus surround the throne.
Refrain:
We’re marching to Zion,
beautiful, beautiful Zion.
We’re marching upward to Zion,
the beautiful city of God.
2 The hill of Zion yields
a thousand sacred sweets,
before we reach the heav’nly fields,
before we reach the heav’nly fields,
or walk the golden streets,
or walk the golden streets. [Refrain]
3 Then let our songs abound,
and ev’ry tear be dry.
We’re marching thro’ Immanuel’s ground,
we’re marching thro’ Immanuel’s ground,
to fairer worlds on high,
to fairer worlds on high. [Refrain]
Hymn 9: I Am Resolved
Philippians 3:13-14
No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

Following Christ is a conscious decision; the moment we decide to follow him we all face challenges. The challenges tend to draw us back and make us backslide. Singing the hymn ‘I am resolved’ helps me to renew my commitment to serving and following God ultimately till the end.
I Am Resolved Lyrics
1 I am resolved no longer to linger,
charmed by the world’s delight;
things that are higher, things that are nobler,
these have allured my sight.
Refrain:
I will hasten to Him,
hasten so glad and free;
Jesus, greatest, highest,
I will come to Thee.
2 I am resolved to go to the Savior,
leaving my sin and strife;
He is the true one, He is the just one,
He has the words of life. [Refrain]
3 I am resolved, and who will go with me?
Come, friends, without delay;
taught by the Bible, led by the Spirit,
we’ll walk the heavenly way. [Refrain]
Hymn 10: I Have Found a Friend in Jesus (Lily Of The Valley)
Song of Songs 2:1
I am the spring crocus blooming on the Sharon Plain,
the lily of the valley
Written by: William Charles Fry
Year: 1881
The flower named lily of the valley symbolises purity, sincerity and happiness. The hymn reminds me of the love of God. It strengthens my confidence in God and reminds me that irrespective of what I face or whatever I go through I have a friend who is always with me. He is more precious than the fairest of all and his love for me is strong, pure and enduring. The hymn ‘lily of the valley’ is my all-time favourite hymn. It brings tears to my eyes.
Lily Of The Valley Lyrics
1 I have found a friend in Jesus-
He’s ev’rything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley- in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay,
He tells me ev’ry care on Him to roll;
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the greatest of ten thousand to my soul.
2 He all my grief has taken and all my sorrows borne,
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tow’r;
I have all for Him forsaken and all my idols torn
From my heart, and now He keeps me by His pow’r.
Though all the world forsake me and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal;
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the greatest of ten thousand to my soul.
3 He will never, never leave me nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear-
With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory I’ll see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll;
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the greatest of ten thousand to my soul.
These are the list of my top ten soul lifting hymns of praise. What are your thought?
