A name is a mark of identification of a person. The bible contains various powerful names of God which reveals the nature and person of God. Throughout the Bible, God introduced himself in different ways and dimensions. Whenever he wants to do something powerful he introduces himself by a name that shows the wonders of his work. The power in the name of God is expressed throughout the bible.
Each of God’s names shows the different ways he can perform his wonders as God. Many times when I want to eulogise God; I call him by these names because they mean a lot to me. It helps me to reflect on the nature of God and some of the blessings and privileges I have received from him.

Below are some of the names of God in the bible and their meaning
Elohim
Elohim means “the powerful and mighty God”. It was used up to 2,570 times in the bible and the name refers to the power and might of God.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 1 verse 1
Elyon
Elyon means the “strongest strong one”. The name means that among the strong ones, God is still the strongest.
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Genesis 14 verse 19,20
El Roi
El Roi means “the one who sees”. God is the one who sees everything. He is in heaven and his eyes see everything that happens to all his creations.
And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
Genesis 16 verse 13
El Shaddai
El Shaddai means “the breasted one” or “All Sufficient One”. God is compared to a woman with this name. In my experience breastfeeding my children, the supply of milk for the child is endless. The baby has enough until they are satisfied. God can supply our needs without running out of resources.
El Olam
El Olam means “the everlasting one”. The Lord is everlasting, his reign does not expire.
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

Exodus 6 verse 2,3
Jehovah is the powerful name of God. It means “he is the self-existent one (he wasn’t created) and the God of the covenant”. He keeps his covenant and stays true to his words. The name Jehovah is very common; it has some compounds which also show the power of God and his nature.
- Jehovah Jireh means “the lord our provider”. The Lord will provide for our needs and he is very capable of supplying us with all we need.
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. - Jehovah Nissi means “the lord is our banner”. The lord is a banner over us his children and his covenant is sure.
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

- Jehovah shalom means “the lord is our peace”. The Lord has given us peace and he wants us to have peace in every realm of our lives.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Judges 6 verse 24
- Jehovah Sabaoth means “the lord of hosts”. He is the lord and commander of the host of heaven.
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
Isiah 6 verse 3
- Jehovah Maccaddeshoem (Jehovah M’Kadesh) means “the lord my sanctifier”. The lord sanctifies us as his children and he has perfected the work of sanctification through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.
Exodus 31 verse 13
- Jehovah Rohi means “the lord is my shepherd”. He keeps watching over us like a shepherd keeps his flock. The Lord takes care of us as a shepherd tends to his sheep.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psalm 23 verse 1
- Jehovah Tsidkenu means “the lord our righteousness”. God has made us righteous by allowing us to partake of his righteousness.
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our Righteousness.

Malachi 1 verse 6
Yahweh ( YHWH)
And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
Exodus 3 verse 14
The meaning of “Yahweh” in the bible is “I AM THAT I AM”. God revealed himself to Moses as Yahweh which shows the everlasting nature of God. The name Yahweh is a compound of the “yodh, he, waw, he” and it is often called a tetragrammaton because it contains four letters.
God called himself by this name when he reveals himself to Moses in exodus.
