Patience is expressed in unshakable confidence and trust in the Lord, even in the face of adversity and the encroachment of enemies. Several bible verses about patience serve as an anchor for us in times of trials and difficulty.
Patience is one of the virtues that God wants his children to have. Life has many tests and trials; having patience and trusting in God will guide us on the right path.

Patience is needed in different faces of life, I have divided the bible verses into different categories depending on the context of the meaning.

Bible Verses about God’s Patience

  • Lamentations 3:2526
    “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

The goodness of God is experienced by those who patiently seek Him, he will never fail those who wait for him.

  • Psalm 37:2324
    “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.”
  • Psalm 86:15
    “But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
  • Proverbs 16:7
    “When a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”
  • Psalm 37:2325

Bible Verses about Patience in Trials and Tests

  • Romans 12:12
    “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Apostle Paul is encouraging us to be patient and persistent in the place of prayer. Tribulation and trial may want to make us derail but if we give ourselves to consistent prayers during tribulations, God’s joy will fill our souls.

  • Psalm 37:3233
    “The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death. The Lord will not abandon him to his power or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.”
  • Proverbs 24:16
    “for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.”
  • Psalm 25:3
    “Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.”
    God is telling us in this bible verse that those who wait for us shall be put to shame. They are patient in evil-doing therefore God will not allow their plans to be fulfilled. It is also a call to believers not to do evil to other people.
  • Psalm 37:1213
    “The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him, but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming.”
  • Psalm 37:12
    “Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.”
  • 2 Peter 3:9
    “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
    God’s patience is tied to His desire for all to come to repentance. God can decide to destroy the whole world because of the multitude of sins but he he is patient and waiting for all to come to him.
  • Psalm 130:56
    “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.”
  • Psalm 27:14
    “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
    One important point in this scripture is the need for courage when waiting on God. We need courage to be patient and resolute in the face of condemnation and trials.
  • Psalm 37:34
    “Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off.”
  • Psalm 37:9
    “For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.”

    Patiently waiting in silence is linked to salvation and a firm foundation in God.

    God will never forget those who trust in him. He is Jehovah El-Shaddai, he takes care of those who wait on him and he satisfies their desires.

Bible Verses about Patience in Waiting for God’s Timing

  • James 5:7
    “Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.”
    The bible likened patience to a farmer waiting for harvest. The bible verse encourages us to wait for God’s time and never try to rush things.
  • Psalm 37:7
    “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”
    We are encouraged to have patience rather than being enticed by the evil ones.
  • Hebrews 6:15
    “And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.”
    Abraham was patient with God and he received the promised child, Isaac.
  • Psalm 40:1
    “I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.”
    The psalmist shared a Personal testimony of waiting patiently for God’s response and God eventually responded to him.

    “Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

    “But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

    The scripture encourages us to wait patiently on God for his instructions and directions; highlighting the importance of quiet time and hearing from God.

  • Galatians 6:9
    “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
    We often get discouraged whenever our goodwill is not accepted or people pay us evil for good but the bible encourages us to be patient; we will reap the reward of our goodwill in due course.
  • Proverbs 14:29
    “Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.”
    Patience is associated with wisdom, and quick anger and temper are associated with foolishness.
  • Colossians 3:12-13
    “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
    Patience is one of the great virtues required for a believer. Patience is like God and we are called to also be patient.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:14
    “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.”
    Patience is needed in dealing with various people, patience will help us understand the challenges of others therefore helping us make better decisions.
  • Proverbs 16:32
    “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
    Patience is compared with inner strength in this scripture. Patience is noted to surpass the prowess of conquering a city.
  • Proverbs 19:11
    “Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.”
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4
    “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant.”
    This bible verse makes a comparison between love and patience, telling us that love is patient, understanding and humble.

    “And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil.”

    “A hot tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention.”
    Patience can bring peace and calm during conflict.

    “With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.”
    This bible verse explains that patience can persuade anybody however difficult they are. It goes further to explain that speaking soft and kind words can melt the hardest heart.

Life may be unfair but these verses about patience highlight the many-sided nature of patience. It encourages us to trust God and deal with others in wisdom, humility and resilience. If we can patiently rely on God, we will reap the good of the land.
