Prayer is an effective tool against every challenge or obstacle we face. The bible clearly states that Christ won our battles, and gave us victory. Therefore, we can use prayer to break down every stronghold while confessing the scriptures. However, our faith is important if we must pull down the stronghold of the enemy. In this article, we will explore scriptures and prayer against strongholds.
But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.
Isaiah 49:25 KJV

Breaking Yoke and Stronghold Prayer Points
In my previous article about Stronghold, I defined stronghold as “anything that has a firm grip on an individual”. It is not very easy to overcome strongholds but prayers help to bring our request to God.
Here are scriptures and prayer that break stronghold.
- Prayer of Thanksgiving
Enter His gates with a song of thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, bless and praise His name.
Psalm 100:4
Heavenly Father, thank you for the privilege to be called your own. I am grateful you have given me victory over every work of the enemy.
Lord, I appreciate you for fighting my battles and showing me your mercy.
Take all the glory and honour oh lord
- Prayer for Mercy and Forgiveness
and My people, who are called by My Name, humble themselves, and pray and seek (crave, require as a necessity) My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear [them] from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 AMP
Dear Lord, I stand before you in reverence this day and I ask for your mercy. Lord have mercy on me and forgive my sins. Father, I ask that you purify my heart and cleanse me of every negative thought and imagination.
Father forgive my negligence, in any way I have allowed myself to be caught in the clutches of the enemy. Father, please forgive me and let me take refuge in you.
Have mercy oh lord and grant me safety in your presence.
- Prayer of refuge in God
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand].
Psalm 91:1 AMP
Abba Father, I take refuge in you today according to your word. Your word says “if I dwell in your secret place, I’ll always be under your shadow”. Father, I come into your secret place today. I am free from every stronghold of the enemy.
I seek safety in you lord.
- I put on the armour of God
Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious]. 14 So stand firm and hold your ground, having [b]tightened the wide band of truth (personal integrity, moral courage) around your waist and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (an upright heart),
15 and having [c]strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news]. 16 Above all, lift up the [protective] [d]shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:13-17 NLT
Father Lord, I acknowledge that my battle is not against flesh and blood but against the powers of the dark world. Therefore, I put on the whole amour of God. I wear the belt of truth so that I can diffuse every lie of the enemy. I put on the breastplate of righteousness and claim the righteousness given to me by God through the death of Jesus Christ.
I wear the shoes of preaching the gospel; helping others break free from the shackles of the enemy. I take up the shield of faith to extinguish every arrow of the enemy. I wear the helmet of salvation therefore my head is protected from every manipulation of the enemy. I take the sword of the word and I cancel every demonic stronghold by the word of God.
- Lord, Scatter those Keeping me Captive
Let God arise, and His enemies be scattered;
Psalm 68:1 AMP
Let those who hate Him flee before Him.
Abba Father, today I pray that you will scatter everyone gathered against me. I pray that you will confuse the enemy. May they turn against each other and scatter before me.
Lord, arise and scatter my enemies, make them become like nothing before me.
- I take the authority given to me
I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth shall have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth shall have [already] been loosed in heaven.
Mathew 18:18 AMP
Oh lord, I claim the authority given to me by God. You said you have given me the authority to bind on earth and in heaven therefore I take charge. I declare that every stronghold where I’m held captive comes down like the wall of Jericho.
I break free from every yoke and stronghold of the enemy.
I am loosed from every stronghold and demonic grasp of the enemy.
- I am hidden in Christ
For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:3 NLT
Father, no one can keep you captive. You cannot be held in bondage in any stronghold; if my life is hidden in you then I cannot be held in bondage. If Christ cannot to bound, then I cannot be bound. I declare that I am free. (Colossians 1:11-13)
Prayer to Break Strongholds of the Mind
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV
Heavenly Father, I take charge of my mind. I no longer live in bondage. I pray that my thoughts are pure. I declare that my mind regains freedom from negative and unholy thoughts. I break free from every bondage that my mind and thoughts have placed me.
Today, I take a stand of faith, I will only think about things that are holy, pure, godly and edifying. I break down every stronghold of unholy thought, demonic imaginations, and every religious bondage. I come against every depressing, obsessive and suicidal thought.
My mind becomes free and spiritually strong. My thoughts inspires and glorify God. My mind conceives everything in God’s plan for me. Gratitude becomes my lifestyle.
Prayer to Break Family Stronghold
But to all who did accept him and believe in him he gave the right to become children of God.
John 1:12 NCV
Heavenly Father, today I seek refuge in you. I break free from every family stronghold that is negatively impacting my life. I dissociate myself from every family stronghold preventing me from fulfilling my purpose in you.
Every wrongdoing of my generation that has placed me in bondage, I declare myself free from them today in Jesus’ name. Your word told me that I will not partake in the punishment of my generation, today I claim those words. I forge a new path for myself and my generation. We will not partake in the punishment for the wicked. (Jeremiah 31:29-30)
You have called me your child and I believe I am your child. I align myself with whatever is in the generation of God. I am no longer bound by the stronghold of my lineage.
Prayers to Release Strongholds on my Son/Daughter
Arise, cry out in the night,
Lamentations 2:19 NIV
as the watches of the night begin;
pour out your heart like water
in the presence of the Lord.
Lift up your hands to him
for the lives of your children,
who faint from hunger
at every street corner.
Heavenly Father, I pray for my children that they are free from every stronghold of the enemy. Lord, I pour out my heart to you over my children; I declare that they are free from the grasp of the enemy.
I stand in the gap and I pray that you will free them from the stronghold they have entered willingly or unwillingly.
They break free from every stronghold of peer pressure
They break free from every stronghold of drug addiction and sexual immorality.
They break free from every stronghold of evil thoughts, demonic imaginations, depression, suicidal thoughts, low self-esteem, low self-confidence and whatever they might be dealing with.
Dear lord, I believe you have answered my prayers.
In Jesus Name
Amen.
