Zobo is a popular drink in Nigeria. It is one natural drink that is common on the streets. Even though it is cheap, it has very great nutritional benefits. Zobo drink is an extract of hibiscus leaves. It is also known as sobo, zobo or soboro. I often make this drink regularly, and my visitors enjoy it. Most people prefer it to carbonated drinks. In this post, I have written simple steps on how to make zobo drink and it has additional ingredients that boosts its nutritional value.

Nutritional Value of Zobo Drink

  • Protein: 1.14 g 
  • Fat: 2.60 g
  • Fibre: 12 g 
  • Calcium: 1.2 mg
  • Phosphorus: 273 mg
  • Iron: 9 mg 
  • Carotene: 0.02 mg 
  • Thiamine: 0.11 mg 
  • Riboflavin: 0.28 mg 
  • Niacin: 3.76 mg 

Zobo drink Health Benefits

  • It boosts sight

The presence of carotene in pregnancy makes it an efficient sight booster. Carotene is converted to vitamin A by the body, which is good for the eyes.

  • It boosts immunity

Vitamin c in Zobo leaves boosts immunity. Vitamin C is an effective immunity booster; it is a powerful nutrient for the human body.

  • It helps fight Anaemia

Zobo leaves have high iron contents; iron is an essential component the body needs to produce new red blood cells. People with Anemia can add zobo drink to their diet, which in turn helps to boost the number of red blood cells and haemoglobin in the body

  • It helps to regulate blood pressure

Ingredients 

  • Zobo leaves ( 2 cups)

Ripe pineapple
  • one medium-sized ripe Pineapple 
  • Sweetener (sugar, honey, e.t.c.)
  • Ginger 
  • Garlic
  • Pineapple Flavour

Preparation of Zobo Drink

  • Wash and peel the Pineapple
  • Separate the pineapple flesh and the peel
  • Blend the pineapple flesh with the blender, and set it aside
  • Rinse your zobo leaves and pour them into a pot ( make sure you rinse the leaves well. The ones gotten from the market here usually contain lots of stones and dirt)
  • Wash the ginger and garlic thoroughly ( I usually don’t peel mine)
  • Add the ginger, garlic, and pineapple peel to the zobo leaves

  • Add water to cover all the ingredient
  • Leave for about 20 minutes (this will infuse the flavour of the ginger, garlic, and pineapple peel)
  • Boil till it is steaming hot ( for about 10 minutes)
  • Leave to cool
  • Sieve with a tiny hole sieve (I usually use a washcloth or the sieve used for pap)
  • Add the sweetener
  • Add the blended Pineapple
  • Serve chilled

You can also add chunks of variety of fruits to improve the taste.
