For a long time, I always thought self-love was selfish, inconsiderate and not Christ-like. After I went through a series of mental breakdowns and fought my way through depression, I understood the importance of self-love. In this article, I will share bible verses about self-love, the meaning of self-love and the significance of self-love. Get a cup of coffee and enjoy this impactful read.

What is Self-love in the Bible?

According to brain & behaviour, “Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Self-love means having a high regard for your well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others”

When explaining self-love in a biblical context, it’s essential to clarify that this concept isn’t about arrogance or self-centeredness. Instead, it refers to a deep appreciation of oneself as God’s creation, recognizing your worth in His eyes. Although many people do not understand the true meaning of self-love, some people believe self-love to be “doing anything I want with my body”, “lack of respect for what other people think even when your actions affect them negatively” or “thinking of yourself without putting others into consideration”, that is not self-love.

The Foundation of Self-Love for Christian

The foundation of self-love for Christians is deeply rooted in our faith and understanding of God’s love and purpose. Here are some of the things that form our foundation for self-love as Christians:

1. Divine love: Christian self-love begins with acknowledging God’s unconditional love. We understand that we are God’s cherished creations, made in His image, and loved by Him. This recognition of divine love forms the bedrock of our self-worth. If we can accept God’s love then we have shown ourselves love.

2. Understanding Identity in Christ: we believe that our true identity is in Christ. We see ourselves as children of God, and this shows our worth and value as God’s chosen one.

3. Forgiveness and Redemption:  Central to the Christian faith is the concept of forgiveness and redemption through Jesus Christ. Understanding that our sins are forgiven and letting go of past hurt is self-care.

4. Self-Reflection and Growth: in recent years, I have discovered the importance of self-growth and personal development for Christians. While growing spiritually, we must also endeavour to grow in other areas too. The more we grow, the more impact we make in the world.

5.  Prayer and Meditation: many people see prayer as a necessity but, not all pray with the right intention. Praying and meditating on the word of God builds our faith and improves us. Continuously engaging in prayer and meditation is an act of self-love with great rewards.

6. Supportive Christian Community: Belonging to a faith community provides essential support and encouragement. Fellow believers help reinforce the message of God’s love and self-worth, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance.

7.  Loving Others as Yourself: The Golden Rule

In Mark 12:31, Jesus instructs us to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This commandment implies that we should love ourselves as a prerequisite for loving others. Self-love, in this context, serves as the foundation for extending love and compassion to those around us.

Is Self-love Important for Personal Growth?

Self-love is a fundamental aspect of personal growth. I believe you will grow and improve yourself if you love yourself. Personal growth allows individuals to embrace their identity in Christ and walk in confidence. By understanding and applying the principles of self-love rooted in the Bible, we can lead more fulfilled and purpose-driven lives.

Biblical Examples of Self-love

Self-love, in the context of the Bible, can be understood as a deep sense of self-worth and identity rooted in God’s love and purpose. While the term “self-love” may not be explicitly mentioned in the Bible, there are several individuals whose stories and experiences demonstrate a healthy sense of self-worth and a strong connection with God’s love. Here are some examples:

1. David: King David is a man known for his faith and resilience. He expressed a deep connection with God. In Psalm 139:14, he acknowledged his own worth as a creation of God, saying, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” David was a man who understood his worth, he was not afraid to face the lion, bear and Goliath. Throughout his experiences, he acknowledged how precious he was to God and God’s plan.

2. Mary Magdalene: Mary Magdalene’s encounter with Jesus is a powerful illustration of self-love. Despite her past struggles, she experienced forgiveness and transformation through her faith in Jesus. Her love for Jesus and her commitment to following Him exemplify a deep sense of self-worth. She forgave herself, and she followed Jesus until the very end.

3. Ruth: Ruth’s story, found in the Book of Ruth, showcases her unwavering loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Her commitment to caring for Naomi and her willingness to embrace a new life demonstrate self-love grounded in empathy and faith. Ruth was not afraid to find a new path for herself; she could have refused to marry Boaz or move on in life. She picked up the pieces of her life and she found peace in her decision.

4. Paul: The Apostle Paul’s writings reveal his understanding of his identity in Christ. In passages like Galatians 2:20, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing one’s worth through a relationship with Jesus: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” He knew the plans of God for him and he faithfully followed God till the very end.

5. The Woman with the Issue of Blood: The Woman with the Issue of Blood is a story of a courageous woman who had self-love and defied the odds. She was bleeding for 12 years and needed healing.  Some women would have resigned to faith; some would be too ashamed to go out of their homes because they were considered unclean by society.

She touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and she was healed. She didn’t allow the crowd or society to stop her. Her determination and belief in her worthiness to receive healing highlight the concept of self-love in the context of faith.

6. The Prodigal Son: The parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15 is the story of a young man who, after making poor choices, returned to his father in humility. His father’s loving and forgiving response demonstrates the idea of recognizing one’s worth, even after making mistakes. It is self-love to admit our mistakes, accept them and improve ourselves.
